At its facilities Motor Oil in Agioi Theodorou, the first “hydrogen station” in Greece will operate. The filling station with hydrogen for heavy vehicles as well as I.X. of cars is already manufactured by AVIN (subsidiary of Motor Oil) and according to company officials it will be ready to operate at the end of the year. AVIN is planning another gas station hydrogenin Akrata, with a completion horizon of late 2025.
As the general director of AVIN pointed out Yannis Raptakisat an event for the presentation of the new fuel generation ACTION Fuels, the two stations are built on different streams of the national road in order to serve the heavy vehicles arriving from abroad through the port of Patras. One refueling station will operate at the height of Akrata in the direction from Athens to Patras and the second one in Agioi Theodorou in the direction from Patras to Athens. The pumps at both stations will be very high pressure (over 200 bar) to refuel all vehicles.
According to the executives of AVIN, in the first phase the hydrogen that will be supplied through the two stations will be blue, i.e. it will be produced by natural gas at the Motor Oil facilities, and in the next phase, with the implementation of the planned investments, it will be green, i.e. it will be produced from RES.
Much earlier than the operation of the first hydrogen station, Motor Oil will refuel the first one hydrogen bus which will arrive from Vienna to Athens with intermediate stations in other European and Greek cities. This is the European program JIVE (Joint Initiative for hydrogen Vehicles across Europe) in which Motor Oil participates and it concerns roadshows with hydrogen buses. There have already been two in Western Europe and within the next two weeks the third will start from Vienna and will reach Athens, after passing through Kozani, Thessaloniki and Patras.
The cities have been selected based on the interest shown by the municipalities in participating in the program, through their funding for the purchase of buses or other heavy vehicles that will be powered by hydrogen.
