The father of Yiannis Kallianos, Dimitris, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 79.

In the previous days, the meteorologist and deputy of the New Democracy had described, in a dramatic tone, the seriousness of his father’s condition, while he had also expressed complaints about the way his family was treated at the hospital.

His father’s adventure in “Atticon”, Georgiadis’ answer and the hospital’s explanations

In the meantime, determined to reveal everything that happened during his father’s hospitalization, Yiannis Kallianos appeared. The well-known meteorologist and Member of Parliament of New Democracy told protothema.gr that “everything will take its course and everything will come to light. I don’t care what anyone says. I don’t care about the opinion of third parties who don’t know what was going on in my father’s room. I promise it will all come out and then they will know who is right. Because I have evidence that proves the truth.” The above statement by Mr. Kallianos is a message to all those, as he says, who without knowing what happened in the room where his father was until he was transferred to the intensive care unit are making statements about the case.

The adventure of Kallianos’ father to be hospitalized in the ICU of “Attikon”

It all started with the video posted by the MP of New Democracy, Yiannis Kallianos, in which he describes the health adventure of his father, Dimitris, leaving tips for his treatment in a specific public nursing institution. Listening to the video, questions arise regarding the treatment of the patient and any indifference by the medical staff. However, both the management of the hospital and the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, who have been involved in the incident, assure that a specific protocol that applies to every patient of the NHS was followed to the letter.

The family’s main objection and cause of the tension captured in the video is the 79-year-old’s stay outside ICU for days, with the well-known meteorologist implying that if he had entered the Intensive Care Unit earlier, his health might have improved.

It all started on Tuesday when Mr Yannis Kallianos posted a video. In it, with tears in his eyes, he accused the doctors of the hospital where his father has been hospitalized for days for not paying due attention to his care. In fact, he refers directly to the doctor who operated on Dimitris Kallianos for the diabetic leg, as well as other doctors at the hospital, who claimed that the patient is doing well, according to what is mentioned in the video, while he suffered a seizure and was finally admitted to the ICU. “They will pay dearly for what they did to my father,” he says specifically.

As it became known, the hospital that was targeted by the ND MP is “Attikon”. Before his father was served in it, he had been transferred to his vicarage Asklepiou Voulaswhere it was deemed necessary to transfer to a nursing facility with a vascular surgery clinic for the treatment of a severe complication of diabetes mellitus.

The information from the administration of the “Attikon” hospital, which issued a statement yesterday afternoon after the publicity received by the well-known meteorologist’s complaints, states that the Dimitris Kallianos was admitted to the First University Vascular Surgery Clinic on 4/6/2024 due to gangrene of the end of the left leg.

In accordance with hospitalthe patient suffers from, inter alia, end-stage renal failure on hemodialysis, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, severe coronary artery disease and heart failure (acute myocardial infarction and repeated percutaneous coronary angioplasty, atrial fibrillation, tricuspid insufficiency, defibrillator placement), pulmonary fibrosis with home oxygen therapy and genital cancer.

“The patient underwent successful surgical treatment of the gangrene, while his complex pre-existing problems were evaluated and treated intensively during his hospitalization by all involved specialties (cardiologists, pulmonologists, nephrologists, infectious disease specialists). On 4/22 the patient reported subjective deterioration, with stable vital signs and condition tests (good communication, good gas exchange and spontaneous breathing, stable hemodynamic picture without support), a picture that did not meet the medical criteria for ICU admission. During 4/23, he presented signs of mild but worsening tissue hypoxia (good communication and gas exchange, but a mild increase in lactate which the previous day was completely normal), was evaluated by the ICU and it was decided to admit him to the Intensive Care Unit at 18.30. During transport preparation the patient had a convulsive episode and was intubated. He was transferred to the ICU where he remains intubated in a serious condition, on mechanical support of organs and systems”, the announcement of the “Attikon” hospital points out.

In the same announcement, the following is clarified: “Patients are admitted to every ICU in the country under strict conditions and criteria and after they are registered on a centrally controlled platform of the EKAB, criteria which the specific patient did not meet until 4/23. Indicatively, it is stated that according to the data of the EKAB platform, no non-intubated pathological patient was included in the platform in the last month”.

It was preceded by a post by the Minister of Health, with which he made it clear that “no one from the hospital was indifferent”. In particular, Adonis Georgiadis, for the correct information of the public, wrote the following:

  • “A) The process of entering an ICU patient is transparent, according to strict medical criteria. Therefore, the Ministry and I personally do not interfere -officially- in this purely medical procedure.
  • B) None of us are exempt from this process, as access to an ICU bed can in some cases decide someone’s life or death. Against this we are all absolutely equal. Decisions are made by doctors based on scientific criteria.
  • C) I have absolute confidence in our medical staff and in this case the legal procedure and the legal criteria have been fully respected.”

Giannis Kallianos responded to the Minister of Health’s post in the evening, saying that it is not Mr. Georgiadis’s responsibility but the clinic’s. Among other things, he repeats how the vascular surgeon who operated on his father claimed that the patient is “doing great”. He also points out that Dimitris Kallianos was never examined by a curator of another specialty but only by specialists. “Professor, commander and deputy commander, they told me that my father’s exams were amazing, perfect, more than good, that is. And they were telling me that the doctors at the clinic decided that my father is fine.”
