Lunar landscape of Attica – The sky was painted orange from the dust all over Greece (images) | Liberal

--

Dark orange sky frames the all-white marbles of the Parthenon, embraces the Constitution, the sky of Attica and in general the entire Greek territory.

The unique yet otherworldly landscape created by African powder resembles an image from space. The phenomenon suffocated citizens, with those experiencing respiratory problems ending up in hospital Emergency Departments. However, it is expected that Greece will breathe from tomorrow, as the African dust recedes.

Images of the basin with its dark orange hue in the sky are making the rounds worldwide, both in international media and on social media, where many are sharing their own experience.

meteo.gr published the satellite image of African dust over Greece, noting that it was an “intense wave of African dust ‘Minerva red'” that affected the entire Eastern Mediterranean.

Regarding the phenomenon, the professor of Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, director of the Research and Sustainable Development Institute at the National Observatory of Athens, Nikos Michalopoulos, explains to the Athenian press “that what we saw in the afternoon in the atmosphere is the phenomenon of the scattering of solar radiation on the layer of dust. As the sun sets and descends low, its rays fall on the layer of dust in the atmosphere. The result is these wonderful and eerie colors that we see in the sky”.
