Orestis Giovas has a premiere right after Easter in the new show entitled “Richard III” which will be staged at the Contemporary Theater on Thursday, May 9 for 15 performances.

The Anima team and the director Rubini Moschohoritis present in a new, subversive way the Richard III of Shakespeare. The modern “perspective” of the classical theater that interests the group and the slanted view, which deals with the texts, is strengthened by the topical adaptation of Andreas Flourakis.

After the Civil War of the Roses between the Houses of York and Lancaster, England enjoys a period of peace. But the king’s younger brother, Richard, hatches plans to exterminate his natural heirs and rivals in order to seize the throne of England, plans which he then carries out with complete success. Thus we follow the Machiavellian rise to power of a corrupt man and his brief reign, which is cut short by his violent death.

During rehearsals for the Shakespearean production Richard III, a director is bossy and harasses his actors. As the rehearsals progress the director, who has kept the lead role to himself, becomes increasingly pushy, especially towards a young actor, pushing the rehearsals to the limit. Many years after the performance, the actor decides to share his story.

The asterisk on Richard III* demonstrates the dark stories of abuse of power behind closed rehearsal doors, which are now increasingly coming to light. This free adaptation is a product of fiction and does not refer to real persons and situations.

The performance, using the theater-within-a-theatre convention, includes three parallel stories: the original Shakespearean play, the events that occur during rehearsals, and an actor’s agonizing effort to project his experience. The coexistence of these interrelated stories aims to highlight the ever-critical themes of the unchecked use of power, the use of violence by the strong against the weak, as well as the role of the media in shaping public opinion.
