Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDIN) spoke with the staff of the “Attikon” Hospital where the father of Yiannis Kallianou was hospitalized, as he reports.

As the president of POEDIN says, the workers told him, as he says, that the father of Yiannis Kallianos received the best possible care at the Attica Hospital, however, the protocols had to be followed.

“The statement of Mr. Kallianos about the staff of the Attica Hospital is unfortunate. We understand the pain and anxiety of his family regarding the progress of his father’s health, who has been hospitalized at the Vascular Surgery Clinic of the ATTIKON hospital since 6/4. But the statements about the responsibility of the staff of the Attica hospital for the state of his father’s health are unfortunate. I spoke to the staff at the ATTICA hospital today and they are outraged. His father succeeded and is receiving the best possible care at the ATTIKO HOSPITAL. He was operated on by Vascular surgeons with success. Several times a day he was seen by doctors of many specialties to deal with the serious health problems he is facing. They were treated in a double ward with the attendants constantly demanding the care of the nurses,” he notes.

What is the situation at the “Attikon” Vascular Surgery Clinic

The president of POEDIN maintains that the general conditions are not easy at the Attica Hospital.

“However, the Vascular Surgery Clinic of Attikon Hospital treats 44 patients. Because there are not enough beds, many are being hospitalized on gurneys and stretchers. Although it is a vascular surgery clinic, it treats many patients with pathological problems, covid-19 patients and a huge effort is made by the minimal nursing staff to prevent the spread of germs.

What are two nurses, or at best three, to do in each shift with 44 patients, most of them in a very serious condition”, he emphasizes.

Finally, he points out that the ICUs do not provide for the hospitalization of non-intubated patients.

“The ICU beds in the country’s hospitals are specific and unfortunately not enough for preventive hospitalization of non-intubated patients. Few or no non-intubated patients are admitted to ICUs. If this tactic were implemented, the 900 ICU beds that are being reduced every day due to severe staff shortages would not be enough. I wish we had 3,500 ICU beds in operation as we should based on the hospital beds we have so that such cases of non-intubated patients could also be served”, he notes and adds that the patient did not meet the specifications for admission to the ICU.

“At the ATTICA HOSPITAL, when the relatives requested that the patient be admitted to the ICU, the doctors diagnosed that intubation was not required and therefore neither admission to the ICU based on his clinical picture. MAF does not exist. When the condition worsened he was intubated and admitted to the ICU. As is the case with all patients at ATTIKO”.

Michalis Giannakos describes the procedure followed in every similar case:

“When a patient needs an ICU, he is registered in the EKEPY information system and in consultation with the doctors and the EKAB, the transport and admission is done. If there is an ICU bed available at the hospital, the patient is admitted there. The ATTICA HOSPITAL examines 1,000 patients in each ward, admits about 200 patients and is the champion of the ranks. The few staff give their lives. If you want to assign responsibility to someone, put aside the few heroic staff that until recently you applauded and assign responsibility where it really exists and that is the pathologies of the NHS, the hospitals. Farewell with all our hearts to the father of Kou Kallianos, as well as to all the patients. Obviously we are not afraid of his threats which we want to believe were made in the heat of the moment.”
