Consumer interest in lambs is down by 30% so far, while Easter is approaching and the bargaining between breeders and traders on prices has not been finalised. The butchers said at noon on Wednesday during a press conference at the EETH that they will back down so that the price does not exceed €15 per kilo, while the producers, who sell 7.5-9 with an average price of €8, are reacting to the decision of the Ministry of Development to include the lamb and the goat in the “Easter Basket”.

“We will back it to be below €15, squeezing our profit. Consider that we are working with a notebook. On the 15-20th day of the month, the consumers’ money runs out. We are waiting for orders. There is sufficiency. But there has been a drop in consumption. And although where there is a decrease in production, there is also a decrease in livestock”, said Mr. Savvas Kesidis, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Butcher Shopkeepers. On his part, Mr. Dimitris Moschos, vice-president of the Greek Livestock Association, indicated that “100,000 mother-lambs were lost due to the bad weather Daniel and the fires”, and he added that in Kastoria Prefecture, while last year there were 6000 lambs, this year the number fell to 836.

He said that the breeders are on the fence hearing how the lamb and the goat will go into the basket with a price of 10 euros”, while he added that 17% of the income of each breeder has been lost and blamed the state stressing that its actions could lead to the destruction of the of Greek livestock.

“If the breeder leaves, we leave too. We will become the weight of the chains”, commented Mr. Kesidis, sounding the alarm bell.

In response to a question about the illegal Greekizations, he said that there are complaints in the ministry’s drawer that have not yet been checked and he added that there is a possibility that slaughtered lambs from the Catholic Easter that were left over and put in freezers could end up in our market.

Easter will be more expensive this year compared to other years, said the president of the Consumer Workers’ Union of Greece, Mr. Apostolos Ratopoulos, and explained: “Last year, the market pass and the accuracy check helped, which this year are not given. In the Easter Basket, out of the 17 chains that should have uploaded it, 14 did. The three did not do it under the pretext of a technical problem with the contractor. The 5 did not they say prices for lamb and goat. Some mention prices for pieces from the leg or the arm. And in some chains the prices start at 10 and reach 13 euros. This means that there is a variation of 40%.”

“Unfortunately, the government does what it wants without listening to the voice of the Chambers”, finally stated the president of the EETH, Mr. Michalis Zorpidis, emphasizing that the prices must be determined by the breeders and traders.
