GSEE is calling for a general strike on Holy Wednesday, May 1st, even though it is a holiday May Day by decision of the Ministry of Labor it was moved to May 7.

In fact, in the middle of Holy Week, the center of Athens will be closed, in order to carry out a demonstration at 11 in the morning.

The gathering of the GSEE and the Labor Center of Athens will take place at 11 am. in Klathmonos square.

The announcement in detail:

The GSEE calls for massive participation in the May Day strike gatherings that take place on Wednesday May 1st across the country.

May Day, also known as Labor Day or International Workers’ Day, is of great importance to workers because it is a day to recognize the rights of the working class and efforts to improve working conditions worldwide.

May Day 2024 finds the country’s workers facing an unprecedented living crisis for another year. Punctuality, social poverty, restriction of labor rights, precariousness and insecurity in workplaces are the dominant consequences of the applied policies.

The 1st of May, in addition to being a day of remembrance and honor for the pioneer fighters of the working class, is also a day of struggle and strike of the workers.

May Day commemorates and honors the successes and sacrifices of workers in history, such as reducing working hours, improving working conditions, and establishing the eight-hour shift. It highlights the right to work and fair working conditions, which is fundamental to social justice and economic security. It symbolizes solidarity among workers around the world and reinforces the concept of shared concern and shared goals for better conditions for all. It provides an opportunity for workers to highlight current issues and challenges in the workplace, such as inequality, unemployment, and adverse working conditions.

For this reason we fight for a better present and future for us and our children. Without accuracy, social poverty, job insecurity and inequalities.

On this historic day, we unite our voices and all together give a competitive, strike-like presence to the call of the unions on Wednesday May 1st.
