In a particularly overwhelming atmosphere, under the light of candles, performers, chanters and believers became one, experiencing the Divine drama, a few days before the week of the Passion.

A religious “pilgrimage”, through hymns and narratives with stations on each day of the Great Week, had the opportunity to enjoy this evening Thessalonians and visitors who suffocated the interior of the imposing Holy Church of Panagia Achiropoiitos.

The event started with narrators Konstantinos Markoulakis, Dimitris Siakaras and Dimitra Antonakoudis. The public experienced the climax of the divine drama through a literary journey through the texts of Nikos Kazantzakis, Kostis Palamas and other leading writers such as Yiannis Varveris and Kyriakos Charalambidis.

With religious reverence and emotion, dozens of attendees sang along with the performers and singers well-known tropes and hymns that are heard only during M. Week.

“Life in the Grave”

The hymns of the Holy Week, from the Orthodox but also the Armenian musical tradition, such as the tropium of Kassiani and Ai geneai passai, resounded throughout the Church, leading the faithful from the mourning of death to the joyous message of the Resurrection and “Christ is Risen “.

The event entitled “Approaching the Divine Passion”, took place in the Holy Church of Panagia Achiropoiitos, as part of the “Worship Week”, which is ongoing in the holy churches and monuments of Thessaloniki.

Well-known actors took over the part of the narration, reading excerpts from the Matthew Gospel, but also excerpts from well-known literary works, giving a more folkloric tone to the event.

The music-narrative event was also accompanied by the Arch Cantor of the Holy Archdiocese of Constantinople Fotios Giannakakis, the Arch Hymnist of the Holy Great Church of Christ Gounas and the High Voice Siranous Tsalikian, as well as the students of the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

Panagiotis Metropolitan of Thessaloniki Philotheos praised the importance of holding such religious events that strengthen the religious feeling while he thanked the Mayor of Thessaloniki Stelios Angeloudis for the initiative to restore the institution of the “Worshipful Week”.

The event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Culture and Tourism Development Vassilis Gakis who, at the beginning of his speech, emphasized the importance of carrying out such cultural activities that strengthen the preservation of tradition and religious worship.

The event is part of the Worship Week organized by the Directorate of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, under the auspices of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, and took place at 8:30 p.m., in the Holy Church of Panagia Achieropoiitou, with free entry.
