The African dust “disappeared” Parnitha, Hymetto and the sea – Athens is another city, when does the phenomenon subside

--

Covered by a veil of African dust, Athens woke up, like many regions of the country. The horizon has disappeared and a dense cloud of dust has taken its place.

The Athenians think they have woken up in another city, as the African dust has created a different landscape. Everything is blurry and one can only see a few hundred meters away.

Parnitha, Hymettos and the sea have disappeared. The Acropolis and other points in the center of Athens are barely visible.

Situations truly unprecedented for everyone, since even the oldest do not remember having experienced a similar incident with the African dust.

The images from various regions of Attica on Wednesday morning are typical.

Similar images also come from Thessaloniki, where the African dust has covered everything.

This situation is expected to continue until noon on Wednesday, when the dust will begin to subside and the atmosphere will clear. Tomorrow Thursday (25.04.2024) things are expected to be much better.

African dust, with temperature fluctuations, creates an explosive cocktail in the atmosphere. Experts say that African dust can cause asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations, so patients with respiratory problems should not be exposed for long hours outside and wear masks.

The atmosphere was suffocating yesterday in most of the country, with the African dust afflicting Athens but also areas of the Region, such as Crete and Kalamata, while the temperature in some areas was reminiscent of summer weather.

African dust blanketed several areas, creating an explosive cocktail for residents.

In Patras, impressive differences in temperature and humidity were recorded yesterday at the two stations of the Atmospheric Physics Laboratory of the University of Patras. Yesterday at 12:00 noon the temperature in Rio was measured at 20.3 degrees Celsius with a relative humidity of 54.9%. At the same time, the station in Koukouli (inside the city of Patras) showed 30.1 degrees Celsius with a humidity of 22.2
