The former Mayor of Central Corfu, Meropi Hydraiou, made public her own position on the issue of the circulation of electric skates in the city of Corfu. Ms. Hydraiou titles her relevant post with the phrase “Don’t make our life Patini!!!” and further states the following:
“I believe that the majority of fellow citizens are in favor of mild and green means of transport that contribute to physical exercise and at the same time to the protection of the environment, creating a more ecological culture. But any such means should be consistent or otherwise fit and be able to function and fit into the data of each place, each city without causing more traffic problems and having negative consequences for residents and visitors.
Electric scooters, with all the precautions and rules that must be followed, would be a very nice and alternative means for a city where there are designated and demarcated bike paths or roads with light traffic or roads with long straights, with visibility and comfort of space to co-exist them by other means of transport.
Unfortunately, none of this applies in our city, so it is not suitable for these skates which ultimately pose a danger to the life and safety of both the rider and the pedestrians and have already created most of the problems and SMALL accidents fortunately until now!
During my municipal term, a representative of a corresponding company had come to my office asking for permission to open a related activity. Expressing all the above arguments, I had refused and then the issue was closed.
Suddenly they appeared in dozens in our city. The agencies involved and our Municipality, before something serious happens, should immediately take a position and have a say, because these skates are left on sidewalks and shared MUNICIPAL areas for a fee!!”
