The call for expression of interest of the Ministry of Shipping for the conclusion exclusive service contracts for barren coastal lines includes among other things for our region and the new data, which is the proposal for connection of Chios, Lesvos, Limnos with the Northern Sporades and the ports of Volos or Kymi. We remind you that the connection with Volos has been put forward as a request from many sides, but the point is to show interest from a shipping company.

These are contracts that will be concluded without rent and traditionally no shipping company shows interest in this invitation. The closing date for applications is 30 April 2024 and the contracts are for the next sailing period, i.e. 1 November 2024 – 31 October 2025.

As the website of Lesvos “stonisi” reports in its publication, this procedure precedes the competition for the barren lines with the lease offer. In essence the lines included in this call for expressions of interest are a list of requests submitted to the Ministry of Shipping by various. The real political will of the Ministry of Shipping will be reflected when the competition for the barren lines is made public with the lease offer.

However, it is interesting that the invitation concerns contracts of one to five years, which means that the way is opened to see multi-year contracts for the assignment of the barren lines.

The lines, concerning the islands of the North Aegean, for which the ferry companies are invited to express interest (without charter) are:

1) Connections with the port of Alexandroupoli (e.g. Alexandroupoli – Samothraki – Limnos – Lesbos with two routes per week).

2) The connections with the ports of Kavala and Thessaloniki (e.g. Thessaloniki or Kavala – Limnos – Mytilini – Chios – Vathy Samos – Agios Kyrykos Ikaria). The proposed lines for the connections with Kavala and Thessaloniki include the port of Sigri (as an alternative to the port of Mytilini).

3) In the barren line Lavrio – Ai Stratis – Limnos with an approach to the port of Mesto of Chiosfor the summer season.

4) For the first time, in the call for interest, we see proposed ship approaches to the port of Petra, a port that has so far been little used as a passenger port.
