These are the 20 best restaurants in the world – Among them a Greek one with two Michelin stars

For foodies around the world, there are few things more enjoyable than going out to eat, trying the work of a celebrated chef, an unusual cuisine, a brand new restaurant or an old favourite.

The world is full of great restaurants, whether they’re local establishments or innovative new arrivals. Food & Wine’s picks for the second annual Global Tastemakers Awards have just been announced, and they’re pretty interesting.

These 20 great restaurants include not only Michelin-starred kitchens, but also family businesses. Many new chefs were recognized this year, as were locations that emphasize farm-to-table food and emphasize sustainability.

From an exciting mix of Greek produce with Scandinavian innovation at Soil in Athens to the intimacy of watching the chefs make their tortillas and tamales from scratch at La Cocina de Humo (Oaxaca), this list is diverse.

But which restaurant has been named the best in the world? The 2024 crown went to Mérito, a Peruvian-Venezuelan fusion restaurant based in Lima’s Barranco neighborhood.

Also included in the list was a special ‘+1’ pick, voted on by the Food & Wine panel. This is Dill in Reykjavik (the first restaurant in the country to be awarded a Michelin star).

A Greek among the best restaurants in the world

Soil has two Michelin stars: a red star and a green star for sustainability. For chef Tasos Mantis, who has worked in temples of fine dining such as Geranium in Copenhagen, everything starts from his private garden in the nearby village of Alepochori. The farm-to-table tasting menus combine Greek ingredients and flavors with a Scandinavian sensibility.
