Municipality of Heraklion: “Safari” after Easter to collect millions from Citizens’ debts

On a “safari” to collect millions of euros from debts citizens even 20 years ago, imposed by the 2023 law, will be served in the next period of time Municipality of Heraklion.

Speaking to Radio Crete and Manolis Argyrakis’ show, the Deputy Mayor of Finance Giorgos Agrimanakisemphasized that the uncollectible debts of citizens to the Municipality of Heraklion amount to 105 million euros, however he estimated that due to various factors this amount is fictitious and the debts are estimated at about half, i.e. a little over 50 million.

Mr. Agrimanakis explained regarding the statute of limitations of debts that the law 5027 of 2023 which determines the statute of limitations in five years imposes it on the municipalities and therefore also on the Municipality of Heraklion giving them a margin until 2025, to be able to collect debts even 20 years back .

After 2025, the statute of limitations will be five years.

The Deputy Mayor called on the debtor citizens to hurry and inform themselves about any debts they have to the Municipality (calls KOK, TAP, all kinds of municipal fees, etc.) if they have received a notice and to proceed with an arrangement otherwise in the next period, specifically after Easter enforcement measures are coming, such as confiscation of bank accounts and VAT numbers.

In order not to be surprised, the citizens can either go to the competent service of the Municipality or through the website heraklion.gr using the taxinet codes to be informed about the debts and settle them to avoid the necessary measures. The measure can be activated for debts over 50 euros.

At the same time, the financial service will immediately proceed with the liquidation of the debts as many citizens have settled many arbitrary fines or have legalized them, some may also not be alive or their debts have been statute-barred in previous years.

Mr. Agrimanakis also pointed out that this law obliges the Municipality to proceed with the collection of debts, otherwise the amounts will be attributed to employees of the financial service.
