Kellas: “I thank the Greek shipowners for their contribution to the reconstruction of Thessaly”

--

“As a resident of Thessalon, I express my deep thanks to the Greek shipowners, as from the first moment of September, they practically stood by my fellow citizens, with a high sense of responsibility, solidarity and empathy.

The offer of equipment and essential items during the initial stage and your dynamic response to the call of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, for the reconstruction of the region, was shocking. Faithful to the saying “Shipping and Society Always Together”, you contributed more than 50 million euros to repair the damage to the schools, with the next step, the energy upgrade, the reconstruction of the environment, and the modernization of the electromechanical facilities, where necessary.”

This was emphasized, among others, by ND MP N. Larissa and Chairman of the Educational Affairs Committee of the Parliament, Christos Kellas, at the event of the Piraeus Maritime Club.

The politician from Larisa, in his greeting, emphasized the enormous contribution of shipping to the Greek economy, underlining:

“Greece remains the leading shipping country in the world. Shipping is one of the most productive pillars of the Greek economy, through its economic, social and strategic contribution. Its total contribution reaches 7% of the GDP, while it directly and indirectly creates hundreds of thousands of jobs in the country, taking into account its strategic role in supporting the island’s economy. However, its contribution to attracting investment and innovation is also important, demonstrating that Greek shipping is a national capital for Greece.

Concluding his presentation, Mr. Kellas, wanting to demonstrate the timeless and interconnected relationship of the Greeks with the sea, pointed out:

“There is no country in the entire world that has identified its existence and survival with the sea to such a great extent as Greece. We Greeks have made the sea our second home. We tamed her, tamed her and loved her. Through it we spread our great culture to all the lengths and breadths of the world.

We are proud that thousands of years later, Greek navigation dominates and leads the way.

And as our great writer Stratis Myrivilis used to say, “all the seas of the world are Greece. All the waves know the keels of the Greek ships…””.

The event was attended by the Minister of State, Makis Voridis and the candidate for MEP, Voula Patoulidou.
