Concern even for the security of the GADA building on Alexandra Avenue, due to a lack of police personnel and the inability to control certain entrances to the building, emerges from a recent internal document of EL.AS. which reveal “THE NEWS”.

The police station in the center of Athens, in which more than 1,000 citizens enter every day – in addition to the 3,000-4,000 officers who serve in it – and dozens of prisoners and those brought in for various crimes remain there, seems to have “back doors” that operate to close the officers charged with his security.

The main concern of the staff of EL.AS. is that there is no armed attack or other similar incident by “invaders” in the building that controls all the police services of Attica and beyond.

The normal entrance of police officers and citizens to the GADA building takes place through the central gate located on Alexandras Avenue. There, access for employees (civil and police personnel) is allowed only with an electronic card, while magnetic gates have been installed and a full record of all incoming data (employees and visitors) is made.

The same cards allow access to the other floors of the building, depending on the status of their holder. However, in some areas the relevant system presents problems in its operation.

The internal document of EL.AS. after finding that recently citizens have been entering and exiting the two entrances of the GADA garages

The reason for writing the… reminder entitled “Access to the AMA building (Athens Police Headquarters)” was the finding that recently citizens have been entering and exiting the two entrances of the GADA garages on Mileon and Dimitsana streets, on either side of the police station building, with the risk of persons with unknown purposes finding themselves in sensitive areas. This concern is therefore reflected in the document drawn up on April 20 by the Internal Operations Department of GADA. In particular, it is pointed out that “according to the security plan, pedestrian police officers – citizens are not allowed to pass through the garage entrance-exit of the building”.

Without control

It is noted that only official vehicles and the private cars and two-wheelers of the police officers who serve in the services housed at the EL.AS headquarters are allowed to enter the parking areas. in Attica. However, there is no electronic control system installed in said inputs-outputs. It is typical, in fact, that in the recent past there have been recorded incidents of loss or even… theft of motorcycles from the GADA garages, which, due to lack of technical means, could not be clarified. According to the police officers who serve in the Alexandra Avenue building, security issues intensify especially during the afternoon and evening hours.

Meanwhile, through the particular “passage” or peripheral elevators enter the building – with the permission of the competent officers – persons whose presence is avoided to be officially recorded for reasons of secrecy.

These gaps, according to police sources, leave room for access to the interior of GADA by unknown persons, who can then make use of the elevators used to transport food materials, waste, etc. in order to “disappear” inside a building, without anyone noticing their presence.

As characteristically reported by uniformed trade unionists, this problematic situation is aggravated by the shortages – of the order of 30%-40% – in personnel tasked with guarding the facilities.

The same situation, moreover, the same sources continue, prevails in almost all of the police services of the territory, which is attributed to the logic of “bribes” (s.s.: favorable transfers) that prevailed in recent years within EL.AS . This is a practice that has recently been attempted to be suppressed, at the initiative of the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis.
