African Dust: Simos in Elafonissos reminded me of Dune

The African dust that has “settled” in recent days in our country has created an impressive and health-threatening scenario.

Images from many parts of the country show the sky has been ‘painted’ an eerie dark orange hue as high concentrations of particulate matter are recorded. In Elafonissos, the landscape yesterday Tuesday looked like a science fiction movie, like Dune. On the famous beach of Simos, on the south side of the island, the sky turned “orange” and in combination with the pebbles on the beach they composed a unique scene.

Watch the video of Weather News Greece:

Concentrations of African dust in the atmosphere will be particularly high today Wednesday, while mud showers are expected mainly in the north and west of the country. The African dust will remain in the atmosphere until at least midday on Wednesday. The “Minerva red” African dust wave, as the phenomenon is called, will then begin to recede. On Wednesday, the turn of the winds to the west will result in the limitation of dust in the Dodecanese and its progressive removal to the east.

The forecast maps of the National Observatory of Athens below show:

  • With red shades the concentration of dust in the atmosphere during the midday and evening hours of Tuesday 23/04.
  • With yellow shades the areas where mud rains will occur during the same time intervals.
