Eastern Attica: The Koropio-Peania Wastewater Treatment Center was inaugurated – Economic Post

Today, Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the new Koropi-Paiania Sewage Treatment Center (KELKP) was inaugurated by the Regional Governor of Attica Nikos Hardalia, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of EYDAP Giorgos Stergiou and the Managing Director of the Company Haris Sahini in the presence of the Mayors of Kropi and Paiania , Dimitrios Kiousis and Isidoros Madis.

The KELKP, with a budget of 106,836,936 Euros (before VAT), was built under the supervision of the Region of Attica and was financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the EU and the Operational Program “Attica 2007-2013, SAE 085/8” and “ESPA 2014- 2020”. Its management and operation has fallen to EYDAP, just as it was foreseen by the Program Agreement.

The event was attended by the Minister of State, Makis Voridis, the Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination, Manolis Grafakos, MPs, Mayors of Eastern Attica and representatives of the contractor company K/X ERETVO SA – AAGIS SA.

The invited guests toured the KELKP facilities and were informed about the wastewater and sludge treatment procedures followed.

The KELKP is located southeast of Athens International Airport, Eleftherios Venizelos and is part of the construction of a modern sewerage network that will serve 100,000 residents in the Municipalities of Kropia, Paiania, Pallini and Mesogaia-Markopoulos. With its future expansion plans, the KELKP will gradually be able to accommodate the additional waste water load of the coastal areas of the Saronikos and Kropia Municipalities, serving, until 2049, 125,000 inhabitants.

The new Wastewater Treatment Center (SWTP) is a key environmental infrastructure, protecting the marine recipient, through the treatment of urban wastewater carried out on the basis of a modern framework of sustainable management of liquid waste and aims to meet the most stringent treatment requirements. The recycled, 95% pure, water resulting from the KELPP will be reused for the purposes of irrigation of local crops, urban and peri-urban use and enrichment of the underground aquifer.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of EYDAP, Giorgos Stergiou, stated that: “Today we are inaugurating the operation of the KEL Koropi-Peania and we are starting a series of projects of similar importance that are part of an emblematic investment program, i.e. the creation of a state-of-the-art system with collection networks and sewage treatment centers for the whole of Eastern Attica. We substantially contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens, stop the burden on the environment and strengthen the development prospects of the region with the innovation of irrigation from water recovery”.

Big change in Anat. Attica

“KEL Koropi – Peania marks a big change for Eastern Attica” the Regional Governor of Attica pointed out in his speech, underlining that “With holistic interventions we are upgrading Eastern Attica, one of the most developing residential and economic regions of our country, which is changing with projects that protect the environment and the seas of the wider region, with projects that are an integral element of its identity”.

Mr. Hardalias pointed out that the operation of the unit, which is “part of the largest environmental intervention currently underway in Greece” is part of the major projects implemented in the region by the Region of Attica in collaboration with EYDAP and the relevant Municipalities, in the context “a strong cooperation for the protection of the environment and the rational management of the water resources of Attica”. These projects, which as he said, “highlight our priority to create a green and humane Attica”, include the creation of three new sewage treatment facilities and more than 1,000 kilometers of drainage network in the wider area. “And I want to make a commitment that we don’t stop here. Our plan for the next five years clearly foresees that we continue to invest in green policies and projects, with a strong environmental footprint. We continue even more dynamically, for an even more promising and greener future” concluded Mr. Hardalias.

The Managing Director of EYDAP, Haris Sahinis, referring to the project, emphasized that: “The KELKP project is an important milestone in the process of completion for the drainage projects in Eastern Attica. Projects that are part of the demanding investment plan implemented by EYDAP which reaches 2 billion. euros and includes the construction of important projects throughout the water cycle with the aim of upgrading the quality of life of citizens, protecting the environment and resilience to the challenges of climate change”.
