Weather – African dust: Seven times more dust today than yesterday

--

All meteorologists may agree that from midday onwards the African dust will subside and there will be no repeat of the eerie images of Tuesday afternoon with many areas of the territory reminiscent of the planet Mars, however the health risk remains with the Attica to wake up with a cloudy atmosphere.

As the ERT meteorologist specifically explained on Wednesday morning, Panagiotis Giannopouloswhile on Tuesday at the visual peak of the phenomenon the concentrations recorded were of the order of 100-120 micrograms per cubic meter of air, today, Wednesday, the measurements he saw were of the order of 700-800 micrograms.

The same risk was pointed out, yesterday, by the professor of Pulmonology Nikos Tzanakis, who speaking to protothema.gr said that the consequences of the burden on the atmosphere on Tuesday will be seen in 24 to 48 hours (that is, today and tomorrow).

It is also no coincidence that the Ministry of Health made recommendations today following the regularly scheduled briefing by the Ministry of Environment and Energy:

For people at increased risk

  • – People with respiratory problems, heart patients, children as well as people over 65 should avoid any physical exercise-activity outdoors.
  • – It is also recommended to avoid staying outdoors, especially in areas with increased traffic.
  • – People with asthma may need more frequent inhalations of reliever medicine. If symptoms persist, it is recommended to contact the attending physician.

For the general population

Every person is advised to avoid any physical exercise outdoors and to limit the time spent outdoors especially in areas with increased traffic. During his stay indoors, doors, balcony doors and windows should be kept closed.

How the dust will move by Thursday morning

According to the forecast data of the DUST/METEO system of the National Observatory of Athens, the strong Saharan dust transport episode called Minerva Red will show a recession today as the prevailing west northwest winds will result in the progressive transport of high dust concentrations towards the Aegean , while tomorrow, Thursday, high concentrations of dust will be found in the Dodecanese.

We became the planet Mars

Yesterday the increased concentrations of dust in the atmosphere created an orange veil that covered the entire country creating an eerie scene. At the same time, there was also an increase in the number of patients with respiratory problems in hospitals, with pulmonologists recommending caution and limiting movement for vulnerable groups.

The eerie scene was also captured in a post by the meteorologist, Kostas Lagouvardou, on Facebook. Uploading a photo from the Observatory in Penteli, he writes in his post: “Our colony on Mars”.

The African dust storm as captured by satellite

New satellite images show the extent of its phenomenon African dust which completely drowned Greece. Satellite data from the American NASA Aqua satellite that passed over our country on Tuesday morning, show in particular in high resolution the intense wave of African dust “Minerva red» that took place in the Eastern Mediterranean region affecting Greece to a very large extent.

The shallow low in the Sirte area moving towards Greece carried very large amounts of African dust making the air quality very difficult, composing an eerie scene with a red sky.

Apart from the African dust, very high temperatures were recorded in areas of Southern Greece and especially in Crete, where the highest temperature was recorded in Falasarna of Chania with a value of 36.6°C.

The wave of African Minerva Red dust has not only affected Greece. It is recalled that air traffic was suspended in eastern Libya yesterday due to a strong sandstorm coming from the Sahara, which was also the reason why public services and educational institutions were temporarily closed, according to local authorities.

A problem was created at all airports in the regionnotably at Benina in Benghazi where the runway had been covered by a thick layer of sand.
