With an impressive video, “Olympia Odos” announced that it has completed 15 years of operation. Let’s see what is the important innovation of this highway and of course the related video!
Olympia Odos is the first highway in Greece to implement an intelligent road lighting system that automatically adjusts the intensity to the level of traffic and the quality of driving conditions. This initiative is a new step in the wider highway design to increase environmental performance and achieve the goal of “Zero Emissions” by 2030.
Utilization of Artificial Intelligence
The system uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning to ensure the highest levels of safety, while processing data from multiple sources (traffic, weather conditions, road incidents) at any moment in order to determine the optimal level of illumination.
Continuous monitoring of vehicle traffic at each junction allows the system to calculate the total traffic on the highway and make predictions for the next hour. When traffic decreases and the traffic prediction remains low, the system will gradually dim the lighting. The system also includes real-time data from weather stations and highway cameras, so it instantly increases lighting when driving conditions change.
After the successful validation by the Safety Controller, the system is put into trial operation in the Elefsina-Corinth section. It is expected that by next summer it will be implemented along the entire length of the highway. More information can be found in our relevant text by clicking here.
