Yesterday the increased concentrations of dust in the atmosphere created an orange veil that covered the entire country creating an eerie scene.

At the same time, there was also an increase in the number of patients with respiratory problems in hospitals, with pulmonologists recommending caution and limiting movement for vulnerable groups.

Attica

Gradual retreat from the west

The dust is gradually moving away from the country from the west, according to ERT meteorologist Panagiotis Giannopoulos. In the afternoon it will be limited to the eastern Aegean and by evening the atmosphere will have cleared. Already in the morning, westerly winds are blowing in the west, in the Aegean the southeast winds will turn to westerlies from the afternoon.

The attention of vulnerable groups is recommended by pulmonologists

Experts reiterate the danger to health, due to the high concentration of fine particles in the air, while meteorologists predict that the phenomenon will last until today, when it will begin to recede from the west.

African dust, combined with strong temperature fluctuations, creates an explosive cocktail in the atmosphere. According to experts, African dust can cause exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is why patients with respiratory problems should not be exposed for long hours outside and wear masks.

“If I develop symptoms and do not know that I have a disease, I should not assume that this is the result of African dust. African dust in a healthy person does nothing. It means that I have a respiratory disease and I haven’t discovered it” points out the professor of Pulmonology and Intensive Care, EKPA Theodoros Vasilakopoulos.
