Syros: The Vari submarine pipeline is on track for implementation

--

It seems that the project “Construction of a twin underwater pipeline for bringing in sea water to the desalination unit of Vari Syros” is on track for implementation. Although the tender for the project, which was carried out a few months ago, turned out to be fruitless, since there was no interest in submitting bids, the implementing body of the project, which is the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Syros, undertook to start negotiations for the assignment of the project.

Thus, following market research and taking into account the special conditions and requirements of the project, an agreement was reached with the technical company T&T Constructions S.A.which will undertake its execution, against the amount of 449,828.16 euros. The specific agreement was accepted by the Board of Directors of DEYA Syros and it is now expected that the procedures for the final signing of the contract and the start of the works will begin in the coming months.

What does the project include?

The purpose of the proposed project is to ensure a continuous and sufficient supply of seawater for treatment at the existing Vari desalination plants.

The current pumping close to the coast and close to the small dam is a temporary solution and creates many operational problems in the desalination units, since it carries away algae and sand to such an extent that, at times, especially in the southern areas, their operation is interrupted. The said project will receive sea water at a distance of one hundred and fifty meters from the shore and at an average depth of three meters from the bottom and three meters from the surface of the sea, so that it is free from floating materials and clean for the supply of the two desalination units, daily production of 750 cubic meters.

The project, apart from its benefit for the desalination units, will upgrade the beach and the aesthetics of the area, since all facilities will be constructed below the seabed and undergroundwhile, finally, the pipes visible today that run through the adjacent walls will be removed.

In this specific project, the construction of a twin underwater seawater suction pipeline is planned, diameter 250mm and length 325mas well as the construction of a supply well with a pump system. Their settlement point is inside Vari Baywith the aim of more efficiently supplying the Vari desalination units.
