The Association of Friends of ITE (Research Technology Foundation) is holding its first, for this year, annual event, on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 8:00 p.m., in the “Kastellaki” Hall of the Chamber of Heraklion.

The event is dedicated to the memory of George Grammatikakis who was a professor and rector of the University of Crete and includes, among other things, the development of an interesting and current topic:

“Science, Pseudoscience, Conspiracy Theories and Democracy”

In particular, they will speak:

-Mr. Stefanos Trahanas, Physicist and writer. Title of his speech: “Science and Democracy in troubled times”.

– Mr. Vangelis Tzoukas, Dr. Sociology. Title of the speech: “Weird theories, irrationality and postmodernity.”

Before the speeches, at the beginning of the event, Mr. Yiannis Papamastorakis, professor emeritus of the Physics Department of the University of Crete, will be declared an honorary member of the association.

Yiannis Papamastorakis comes from Ano Viannos.

He studied Physics at the Technical University of Munich from where he received his PhD in Space Physics in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in 1975. He then worked as a Researcher at the Max Planck Institute and from 1980 he was a lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of Crete .

At the University of Crete he was an assistant professor from 1985. He then became an associate professor in 1990 and was elected to the rank of professor in 2005. He retired and was elected an emeritus professor of the Department of Physics in 2009. He was the founder and Director of the Skinak Observatory, from 1985 until his retirement.

Since 2001 he is the President of the Organizing Committee and then the Scientific Director of the Onassis Lectures which are organized every July at the ITE facilities in Heraklion

The event will close with the awarding of the Heraklion Chamber of Commerce 2024 award to an ITE researcher. The committee that will select the researcher to whom the prize will be awarded and whose name will be announced in a later press release is already being formed.

The event will be coordinated by Mrs. Maria Zachariaki.
