Do you recognize the area? You must have been there

--

In the last decades, Athens has changed dramatically. If someone gets their hands on an album of old black and white photos of the city they can see it.

The “face” of the capital has been “transformed” many times and today almost nothing reminds of the Athens of the 50′ or 60′. Even older residents may find it difficult to recognize the city and its areas if they see photos of it with the flavor of another era.

One such photo is the one below. Do you recognize the area shown in the photo? If you are a resident of Athens, you have definitely passed by there.

Do you recognize the area shown in the photo?

– Cell
– Monastiraki
– Center of Athens

If you see the answer you won’t believe how the point has changed over the years.

The answer to the quiz about ancient Athens

In the photo taken in 1947 you see the center of Athens. Specifically, the image shows Panepistimi Street at the junction with Korai Street and a view of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. Photo taken by KW Gullers.

University Street is a historic street in the 1st municipal unit of the city of Athens. It is part of the grid of the urban plan that was implemented north of the old city, developing along the perimeter of the historic center and in parallel with the Academy and the Stadium.

It is one-way since 1960, running south-north. It has a total length of 1.2 kilometers, with six traffic lanes, five for the movement of vehicles and one reverse traffic for means of transport.

The name of the street comes from the University of Athens, whose historic building was built in 1841 and is part of the so-called Trilogy of Athens. The street was officially renamed Eleftheriou Venizelou on September 8, 1945, but remains known by its original name to this day.
