The tragic situation prevailing in the National Health System is demonstrated by the new collapse of the false ceiling in the Orthopedic Clinic of the University Hospital of Rio.
At the end of January 2024, the fact of the fall of the same part of the false ceiling in the Orthopedic clinic housed on the 2nd floor of the University Hospital of Patras “Panagia the Help”, which had caused the injury of the commander of the 6th Health Department, saw the then minister Health Adonis Georgiadis to request the restoration of the problem.
According to sources cited by the local website flamis.gr, fortunately there were no injuries. However, as the same website reports, the situation is exactly the same as that day when the materials suddenly fell from the ceiling to the floor.
It is worth noting that an investigation had also been launched into the matter and found malfeasance. As noted by the local media, it is not about old constructions (which are standing tall and haven’t suffered the slightest damage for so many years…) but about new constructions that were made in the context of the Energy upgrade of the nursing institution.

The new collapse of the suspended ceiling at the Hospital of Rio provoked the strong reaction of SYRIZA, which speaks of “the inability of those responsible to ensure the safety of patients, doctors and nursing staff”.
Despite the panic caused at the end of January by the news about the fall of part of the false ceiling at the Orthopedic clinic and despite the investigation that was carried out, this morning the same false ceiling fell again…
“If things weren’t so serious and dangerous it would be laughable. However, the new collapse of the false ceiling in the Orthopedic Clinic of the University Hospital of Rio shows the inability of those responsible to ensure the safety of patients, doctors and nursing staff” says the Member of Parliament of Achaia and head of the Health Department of SYRIZA, Andreas Panagiotopoulos and adds:
“The previous time an identical event had happened again, the commander of the 6th Ministry of Health was injured, but in the end no one seems to have paid any mind, since “three (months) before the election” the false ceiling fell again, fortunately, from the information we have, without injuries.
In fact, in a parliamentary question and document submission request (AKE) that we had made, we asked “the relentless questions about the immediate restoration of the damages that will eliminate the risk for patients and workers, as well as for the staffing of the technical service, as well as for the planning of the improvement and modernization of the infrastructures”. In addition, we had requested the opinion of the hospital and the 6th Ministry of Health.
Therefore, no matter how angry they appear at the Ministry of Health and the 6th Ministry of Health, let them see to the completion of the projects properly so that we don’t have a tragedy at the expense of patients and workers.”
