The phenomenon of extended use of poisoned baits -based on the data of the recorded incidents-brings to the fore n Biodiversity Protection Society of Thrace (EPVTH), which is active mainly in the mountainous and semi-mountainous regions of Evros and Rhodope.

On the occasion of the recent -end of last month- killing of 47 animals of the wild fauna of Evros from poisoned baits and given that the animals were spotted just a few kilometers from the Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli National Park and the Special Protection Zone of the network Nature 2000the EPVTH emphasizes the danger that also lurks for the protected species of the area.

How the dead animals were located

As stated in the announcement related to the mass killing of animals poisoned animals were detected “after an unprecedented mobilization” – in an area of approximately five kilometers – of three Special Units for the Detection of Poisoned Baits, one of the EPBTH and OFYPEKA and with the assistance of the Forestry Department Alexandroupolis, of the Management Unit of the Evros Delta and Dadia National Parks and the vice-mayor of Feron. Most of the animals found were in advanced decay which, as noted, indicates that they had remained in the area for a long time and they continued to be a source of poisoning for subsequent animals.

“This particular incident happened in nearby with the incident of the killing of two golden eagles, a harrier and a jackal a few days before Christmas, which leads us to the conclusion that in time the illegal use of baits in this area probably coincided. From above incidents one was detected due to a transmitter brought by one golden eagle, while the other was not detected and developed into mass poisoning”, explains EPBTH.

It is noted that his investigation incident of mass poisoning was taken over by the responsible forest office of Alexandroupoli, which conducts the criminal preliminary investigation in cooperation with the responsible Directorate of Agricultural Economy and Veterinary Medicine Evros which sent samples for toxicological analyses, in accordance with the procedures prescribed by law.
