After the resolution of the European Parliament, the State Department, with a summary report, records in 47 pages reports on the situation that prevails in Greece in relation to the rule of law, human rights, refugees and also the case of surveillance, stating that at least 92 Greeks citizens had been the targets of attempted entrapment with the Predator spyware

“In May, a report by the European Parliament’s PEGA Commission of Inquiry into the use of spyware found that the country did not use spyware ‘as part of an integrated authoritarian strategy’, but used the spyware against ‘journalists, politicians and businessmen’, and exported it to countries with poor human rights records. During the year, there were no new reports of spyware cases.”

The reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was severe, underlining that the opinion of the Greek state was not sought in relation to the mentioned issues.

“The report records, without further investigation, allegations by non-governmental organizations that are not independently audited. Precisely because of this indiscriminate recording, it appears that in all countries with a developed rule of law there are serious human rights issues”.

The US State Department’s report sparked a storm of reactions from the opposition.

Stefanos Kasselakis, president of SYRIZA said:

“Is something very wrong in our country?
So wrong that the international community can no longer turn a blind eye?
Should Kyriakos Mitsotakis leave the conspiracy theories and look in the mirror?”

“The New Democracy must stop pretending to be the victim of international conspiracies and deal with the solution of the problems it itself created,” said PASOK-KINAL.

“We fight every day for the overthrow of political associations and the improvement of the level of democracy in our country”, emphasized the New Left.

The investigation into the case of surveillance continues, while the full session of the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority is expected to convene regarding the notification of Nikos Androulakis about his surveillance by the EYP.
