A veil of dust has covered Southern Greece as far as Attica and the situation is dramatic for those who have breathing problems

Eerie images in our country due to the African dust, which the strong south winds directed towards many areas of Greece.

At the moment, the biggest dust problem is located in Messinia, where Kalamata reminds… Libya, while the orange color dominates and has “swallowed” Attica, Ilia, Achaia, Corinthia.

Perhaps the worst episode of African dust transport is underway today after noon in Ilia.

All areas of the prefecture have been lost in the cloud of dust and the situation is really dramatic for those who face respiratory problems and allergies.

Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary movements and wear masks.

The landscape in many areas of Corinthia has been eerie in the last few hours, with the African dust making the atmosphere stifling.

Apocalypse images in Chania as well. African Dust has flooded the atmosphere, changing the color of the city from red to orange and the citizens to develop their own theory and opinion.

Speaking to APE BEE, the deputy mayor for Civil Protection of the municipality of Chania, Meteorologist Manolis Lekkas, explained that there is a large concentration of microparticles pm 2.5 which today are very increased, as well as pm 10.

“The dust comes from Northern desert zones of Africa, it is not dangerous in principle, but it creates a big problem of visual as defined character”.

Mr. Lekkas talks about the peak of the phenomenon tonight, with the Southerners who are expected until the evening to release the atmosphere. “…mainly in the lower layers. In the higher layers the dust will be present”. He also explained that it is a dust that is good for the soil since it contains and transports trace elements that help enrich the cultivated land.

“Citizens should not worry because despite the fear that existed in the past and the theories about health problems when this dust is inhaled, this has not been scientifically proven. Of course, in large concentrations of microparticles in the very low layers of the atmosphere, people with respiratory problems should be more careful.”
