The ERT camera was found on the hill of Filopappos. As he reported, Salamis had disappeared from the landscape from the cloud of African dust, which has covered the Attic sky. At the same time, the Stadium of Peace and Friendship and the Tower of Piraeus were barely visible.

African dust has once again suffocated the country, with the situation really stifling, especially in the south. At the same time, the temperature shows large discrepancies in the southern regions, compared to the northern part of the country.

Speaking to APE BEE, the deputy mayor for Civil Protection of the municipality of Chania, Meteorologist Manolis Lekkas, explained that there is a large concentration of microparticles pm 2.5 which today are very increased, as well as pm 10.

“The dust comes from Northern desert zones of Africa, it is not dangerous in principle, but it creates a big problem of visual as defined character”.

Mr. Lekkas talks about the peak of the phenomenon tonight, with the Southerners who are expected until the evening to release the atmosphere. “…mainly in the lower layers. In the higher layers the dust will be present”. He also explained that it is a dust that is good for the soil since it contains and transports trace elements that help enrich the cultivated land. “Citizens should not worry because despite the fear that existed in the past and the theories about health problems when this dust is inhaled, this has not been scientifically proven. Of course, in large concentrations of microparticles in the very low layers of the atmosphere, people who have breathing problems, they should be more careful and consult their doctor”.

What causes African dust – When does it go away?

The experts repeat it health hazard, due to the high concentration of fine particles in the air, while meteorologists predict that the phenomenon will last until tomorrow, when it will begin to recede from the west.

African dust, combined with strong temperature fluctuations, creates an explosive cocktail in the atmosphere. According to experts, African dust can cause exacerbations of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which is why patients with respiratory problems should not be exposed for long hours outside and wear masks.

“If I develop symptoms and I don’t know I have a disease, I shouldn’t think it’s the result of African dust. African dust in a healthy person doesn’t do anything. It means I have a respiratory disease and I haven’t discovered it,” points out professor of Pulmonology and Intensive Care, EKPA Theodoros Vasilakopoulos.

The meteorologist of ERT, Nicoleta Ziakopoulou, spoke of “impressive weather contrasts in the country”. As he said the stormy southerly with gusts of 10 and 11 Beaufort sent the temperature in northern Crete and the Prefecture of Chania to 35 degrees, at the same time Florina and Metsovo were experiencing rainy weather with only 10 degrees Celsius, a difference of 25 degrees between North and South.

From Wednesday the dust will subsidewhile temperatures are expected to normalize.
