Law School of Athens is “free”: And a new international distinction in a mock trial competition – It won …all the prizes!

The team, after a series of excellent performances, won the first place in Europe, while also taking all the other prizes of the competition: the prize for the best written memos and the prize for the best buyer!

“Relieved” is the last time n Athens Law School, which is constantly distinguished in international virtual contests.

The last one from order of distinctions even at the expense of Cambridge and Oxford, it concerns the team of the Athens Law School, which represented Greece in the European Round of the “ManfredLachsSpaceLawMootCourtCompetition” (2024 EuropeanRounds), which took place from 8 to 12.4.2024, in Vienna (Austria)

The team after a series of excellent performances, won the first place in Europe, while also taking all the other prizes of the competition: the prize for the best written submissions and the prize for the best buyer, which went to Chrysa Borlow!

It’s the first time, in a mock trial competition, that all the prizes are awarded to one team!

It is noted that, in the semi-final, the Law School team prevailed over the University of Cologne, while in the final it prevailed over the University of Leiden. As champion, the Athens Law School will represent Europe at the global finals of the competition, which will take place in Milan in October 2024.

The mock trial competition in question (Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition) organized, on an annual basis, by the InternationalInstitute of SpaceLaw and, at the European level, by the EuropeanCentreofSpaceLaw (ECSL). This year’s case involved legal issues related to the protection of dark and quiet skies, freedom of scientific research in space, and collisions of space objects. The case is available at: https://iisl.space/index.php/manfredlachs2024/

This year’s amazing performance of the Athens Law School comes to seal a brilliant, overall course in this competition, since, based on the results, at European and also global level, since 2011 (first participation in the competition), the Law School of Athens is consistently in the first place in Europe over time, having achieved, over 12 participations, the following:

Participation in the semi-final phase of the European Tour, eleven (11) times,

Participation in seven (7) finals of the European Tour,

European Champion, five (5) times, three (3) in a row (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017)

Two second places (2011, 2022)

Four third places (2013, 2019, 2020, 2021)

At the same time, the Athens Law School holds, comparatively for the same period, the first place in the world, since, since 2011:

He has taken part four (4) times in the World Final Round,

She has been named World Champion one (1) time,

He has occupied, twice (2), second place in the World.

It should be noted that these performances, in their entirety, for the above period of time (2011-2024), both at European and global level, have not been achieved by any other university.

During this year, the undergraduate students made up the team: Chrysa Borlou, Evangelos Gazis and Regina Kourtidis, under the supervision and guidance of the Associate Professor of the Athens Law School C. Kyriakopouloswith the assistance, in the preparation of the team, of the practicing lawyer Giorgos Hatzicharalambous and the (undergraduate) student Vera Palalexi, who were members of the 2022 team.

It should be noted that the Greek students received excellent comments on their performance from the judges-judges, while a particular impression was made by the breadth and durability of their legal claims, as well as their in-depth knowledge of international law and space law. It should also be noted that the members of the Greek team were of young academic age (Mrs. Borlou and Kourtidis are sophomores, while Mr. Gazis is a third-year student), yet they faced and prevailed against teams that had postgraduate students in their ranks!

This unparalleled distinction of the Athens Law School, which continues, in a catalytic way, a timeless presence at the highest level of the mock trial competition in question (which is an extremely arduous academic process, with requirements of exhaustive study and deepening both in public international law and and space law) proves, once again, the exceptional potential of Greek students (all the above distinctions have been won by different groups of students each year), their passion for research and learning, as well as the particularly high comparative position in which they stand among their colleagues around the world. It also demonstrates the depth and high quality of the academic education that the Athens Law School provides to its students.
