The fire brigades are on alert Chania Crete from great fire in a wooded area that erupted shortly before nine in the morning on Tuesday, April 23, near the Souda Naval Station.
The intervention of the Fire Department was immediate with 55 firefighters and 17 vehicles while forces arrived from Vryses and Kissamos. Their task is difficult as in the area there are stormy southerly winds that can even reach 9 Beaufort.
The settlement of Naustathmos has been evacuated as well as the daycare center in the area. The Primary School, the Naval Hospital and the Non-Commissioned Officers’ Club were evacuated as a precaution. The authorities have transferred several citizens to a tanker at the Naval Station.
According to flashnews.gr, the fleet’s apartment buildings are not at risk, as the situation there is under control.
Thick smoke has covered the wider area which is also visible from the National Highway.
Access to the scene has been closed with police directing passing vehicles in another direction.
The situation remains difficult and an order was given to completely evacuate the settlement, while ambulances transport patients to the Naval Hospital of Crete.
A little while ago, a 112 message was sent to the residents of the area, in order to move away from their area. In particular, the message states:If you are in the settlement of Navsthamos, move away from the area. Forest fire in your area. Follow the instructions of the Authorities”.
