“Vrachnas” traffic and noise pollution-130 residents of the Monodendri community co-sign the protest letter

More than 130 residents of the area have co-signed a letter of protest about the serious problem they face during the summer season, due to traffic and noise pollution, to the responsible deputy mayor, asking for immediate measures to be taken.

In the letter of protest it is stated that “in recent years we have noticed an ever-increasing traffic in our area which causes traffic congestion during holidays, weekends and the summer season. Constantly increasing noise pollution, non-observance of the legislation on access to the beach, obstruction of traffic, occupation of sidewalks, etc. which make the situation even more difficult.

The problems that have mainly burdened our region are focused on the following:
1. Road network and infrastructure – Key points of the beach front are incompletely marked as well as demarcated.
2. Lack of policing – Lack of police presence especially on high traffic days makes pedestrian and vehicular traffic difficult to impossible in some places.
3. Noise pollution – Music from shops in the area exceeds legal limits
especially during the hours of common quiet, with the result that there is a disturbance of the family peace.
4. Private parking lots – The parking lots in the shops that exist are in fields, behind houses, in areas with one entrance-exit without the required safety measures provided by law and those residents who are next to them are suffering enormously”.
Summarizing the requests of the residents, the Municipality is called upon to take immediate initiatives and measures, for:
1. Daily policing of the area, especially the coastal zone throughout the summer season and on peak days for the smooth and safe passage of pedestrians and vehicles (holidays, holidays, weekends, etc.)
2. One way in the summer season (May to August) from late afternoon to 02:00 in the morning.
3. Compliance with the legal limits of music as provided by the existing legislation for leisure and catering establishments.
4. Direct lease from the municipality of plots for parking vehicles.
“Everyday life and quality of life means following the traffic rules for
cars, motorcycles, bicycles but also pedestrians. Our place is unfortunately not friendly, nor accessible especially to people with special needs, the elderly, cyclists, etc. which exposes us all irreparably.
We demand and expect the immediate satisfaction of our requests for the solution of the above problems that have plagued us for so many years and have greatly reduced the quality of our lives as well as disrupting our mental and physical health”, they conclude in their letter.
