Controls on the operation of the market “show” a downward trend in basic products

Price reductions in most basic fruits and vegetables have been observed in the last 5 months, based on data from the Central Markets and Fisheries Organization (OKAA), through which most quantities are traded fruits and vegetables in the Greek market.

From the price comparison on 18 April 2024 and 11 December 2023, in 40 essential fruits and vegetables are found:

– reductions in 23 products

– increases to 10
– while the prices of 7 products remain stable.

The biggest decrease is found in broccoli which are now sold 80 cents cheaper, at 1.2 euros per kilo from 2 euros last December, cauliflowers 70 cents cheaper, at 80 cents from 1.5 euros/kg, and aubergines 60 cents cheaper, at 80 cents from 1 .4 euros/kg.

By 30 cents per kilo cheaper are available tomatoesto 1 euro from 1.3 euros in December, and 20 minutes cheaper lemon Tree (60 minutes from 80 minutes) and the spinach (90 minutes from 1.1 euros/kg).

Price reductions are still recorded in carrots (60 to 70 minutes), lettuces (30 to 45 minutes), beets (70 to 80 minutes), oranges (55 of 60 minutes), the fresh onions (1.3 from 1.4 euros/kg) and the garlic (30 of 38 minutes).

Prices are fixed on most varieties apples at 1.1 euros/kg and dry onions at 90 cents/kg, while, slightly increased at pear crystals to 1.5 euros from 1.4 euros/kg, at Kiwi at 1.6 from 1.4 euros/kg and at bananas 1.15 euros from 95 cents/kg.

This downward trend is registered after the latest interventions of the Ministry of Development in the supply chain and mainly with the intervention for the net price from the field to the shelf, which seems to be bearing fruit. Under this permanent measure, suppliers sell their products at net prices, and a credit tariff of up to 3% is provided only for returns or product returns.

At the same time, the “Godfathers’ Basket” came into effect yesterday and the “Easter Basket” starts tomorrow so that consumers can purchase the basic items for the Easter table at affordable prices.
