The clouds that covered the sky of Ioannina on Monday tend to go viral with photos from various places being published on the Weather Greece Facebook page.
As meteorologists explain, this is a meteorological phenomenon called “mammatus clouds”
The phenomenon occurs when a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus cloud creates a pattern of bag-like structures that hang below the base of the cloud. These clouds are often described as a series of hanging, inverted bubbles or bags and can be a spectacular sight.
Mammatus clouds are most commonly seen in the summer months in areas with frequent thunderstorms. They are often seen after the passage of a storm front or during the cooling phase of a storm.
Despite their association with severe weather, mammatus clouds themselves are not dangerous. In fact, they are often a sign that the worst of the storm has passed.
Although today shows the opposite..
