THE ASSOCIATION OF TOURIST ACCOMMODATIONS OF EAST ARCADIA AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF POROS “INDUSTRIAL AQUACULTURES” SEAS OF CHANGE
Our dear friends,
On the occasion of the unacceptable state decision to expand fish farms in Kynouria by 34 times, our association “Eastern Arcadia Tourist Accommodation Association” together with the Cultural Association of the Arcadian Village and the South Kynouria Tourist Accommodation Association participated in the International Conference held in Poros on 18-20/04 on the subject of industrial fish farming (POAW).
The conference was organized by the Katheti organization in collaboration with the Rauch Foundation and the Global Salmon Farming Resistance (GSFR). The conference was attended by representatives of associations, municipalities and organizations from 14 countries, the mayors of Poros, Troizinia-Methanon, Epidaurus and North Kynouria and MEP Petros Kokkalis.
At the conference, the serious problems presented in the regions where STDs are developed and the struggles that have been and are being made in other regions of the world against their spread were mentioned. It was emphasized that fish farms do not comply with the appropriate conditions (eg distances from coasts, their regular displacement, control of food and drugs) pollute the environment, poison the sea and destroy the posidonia meadows. It was also emphasized that the tourist areas in which they intend to develop POAUs will be irreparably damaged and that with the sole aim of profit, the companies that build and operate fish farms violate the laws and are indifferent to the environment. Then the speakers emphasized the need to do marine spatial planning in order to save the areas of natural beauty and tourist interest.
Through the conference it emerged that the environmental studies on which the state relies for their approval are financed by the investors themselves, that in order to produce 1 kg of fish we have to spend 1.2-1.6 kg of wild fish in fishmeal, while many antibiotics are given to fish and some of them are banned like formaldehyde.
The justifiable indignation of the delegates was received by the present general secretaries of the Ministries of Rural Development and Tourism, who however assured that they would transfer it to the higher competent bodies of the government.
In their intervention our clubs emphasized the need to protect the beautiful coastline of the Arcadian Riviera, they also highlighted the problems already presented by the existing three small fish farms in the area and it was agreed that the levels of government should come to our area to have direct knowledge of the subject.
We would like to warmly thank Ms. Fai Orfanidou from “Katheti” and Ms. Eva Douzina from the Rauch organization for inviting us to visit them and exchange our opinions and concerns for a better tomorrow!!
Yours sincerely,
Xenios Kynouros
