On the morning of Sunday, April 21, the Citizens’ Movement for Coexistence and Communication in the Aegean organized a visit to the area of the Reception and Identification Center (K.Y.T.) being built in Vastria.

From a neighboring area with a good view, we were able to ascertain the size of the superstructure. With the participation of experts and people with experience on the subject, the effects that will occur on the livelihood of the refugee-immigrants who will live there, as well as the environmental degradation that it may cause, were investigated. Particular weight was given to the risks of total destruction of the island’s pine forest by a megafire and the responsibilities of the previous local representatives who consented to the start of the work were emphasized.

The issue has not ended, as the majority of the local community does not want the operation of the superstructure in Vastria and appeals to the Judicial Authorities are pending. The attendees agreed to organize information meetings in Mytilini, so that the society would realize the magnitude of the problem and organize its resistance against the operation of the camp in the heart of the lesbian forest.
