What are Foen type winds and how are they related to the rise in temperature in our country

--

The transport of African dust, which in the south will show increased concentrations in the atmosphere, is favored by meteorological conditions.

According to the meteorological forecasts, on Tuesday we expect sparse clouds with occasional thicker ones with local rains mainly in the west, central and north. The winds from eastern directions will blow with intensity, in the south, 6 to 8 Beaufort. The temperature will rise mainly in the west and south and will reach 30 degrees Celsius while we are expected to see large temperature differences between regions.

According to the director of the National Meteorological Service, Thodoris Kolydas, “many times we have seen similar differences or even greater than 16°C between Northwestern Greece and Southern Island areas, especially in the cases where strong downward southerly winds prevail”.

The 30 days “will be limited mainly to Crete, or where the locally strengthened Foen-type descending winds will again play an important role”, according to Mr. Kolydas.

Downwinds are the strong winds that blow on the leeward side of a mountain mass and descend towards its foothills. The maximum intensity of the winds is located in the foothills and weakens significantly at a short distance from the mountain mass. Downwinds can be either warm, in which case they are usually called foehn while its more common name is libas.

According to the EMY forecast, local rains are expected in the Ionian, continental and northern Aegean and sporadic storms in the northern Ionian and western, central and northern continental with gradual improvement after noon.

Mercury “climbs”.

Meteorological conditions favor the transport of African dust with increased concentrations in the atmosphere.

The winds will blow from eastern directions 5 to 7 and in the Aegean locally 8 to 9 Beaufort. From the afternoon gradually to the west they will turn to northwesterly 4 to 6 Beaufort.

The temperature will rise to its maximum values in southern Greece and to its minimum values in the north. It will reach 19 degrees in the north, 24 to 27 in the rest of the country and 29 degrees Celsius locally due to the southerly winds in northern Crete.
