Chania: The fire at the Souda Naval Station is under control

A large fire broke out on Tuesday morning in Chania, at the intersection of the National Road leading to Navsthamos, in the area of Souda.

The mobilization of the Fire Service is great with several vehicles from Chania and Vrysses rushing to the scene. An alert from 112 also sounded which informs about a “forest fire in the area of Naustathmos, Crete”.

The fire took on large proportions, as a result of which the preventive evacuation of the Primary School, the Naval Hospital and the Non-Commissioned Officers’ Club was requested.

Right now the fire is without an active front, only minor burns within the burned area are treated. There is no damage to infrastructure and homes while the wind remains strong at 8 Beaufort.

According to zarpanews.gr, the residences of Naustathmos have been evacuated while the kindergarten and the Primary School have also been evacuated, with the children and teachers being transferred to Souda Square.

The Naval Hospital of Crete was also evacuated

A little before 10 o’clock the Naval Hospital of Crete was also completely evacuated. As stated to zarpanews.gr, the commander Mr. Balaskas and the eight people who were hospitalized at the institution have been safely removed. At the same time, a first aid station has been set up on a naval tanker.

According to the Fire Service, air forces were also mobilized.

LoDue to the fire, the start of the 2nd phase of the MINOA exercise, which would have started this morning in Chania and Rethymnon, will be delayed.

According to the recording and evaluation of the complete situation up to this time, the P.Y. informed that:

“Without an active front is the forest fire in Souda Chania. The fire brigade in 2 hours from its start limited the front of the fire. At the moment only small fires are being treated within the burnt area. No damage to infrastructure and houses. The wind remains strong at 8 Beaufort.

The hospital was partially evacuated as a precaution as there was no threat and everyone returned. The children from the Kindergarten in Souda were safely transported to the stadium, according to the planned plan, and received by their parents.

All forces continue and operate. In particular, 79 firefighters with 5 groups of pedestrian departments, 22 vehicles and 1 helicopter. Assistance from forces provided by the Navy of the Naval Station, volunteers as well as waterborne OTAs”.
