Nine barrel-bombs with xylene (flammable material that is believed to have spread havoc in the deadly train accident in Tempe) still remain in the Customs House of Patras and the residents of the Southern Districts tremble at the idea of the unexpected!
The barrels were seized on March 19 from Customs auditors of AADEorigins from Italy. Overall, they delivered 229 tons of chemical materials which were checked by the State General Chemistry and it emerged that these are extremely dangerous solvents, namely xylene and toluenewhich are used to adulterate the fuel.
From the day of seizure more than 1 month has passedhowever the “bombs” remain parked in the open air and around the house – speaking in “Peloponnisos”– express strong concern, arguing that “they should have been taken to a safe place”. And they add:Our safety is at risk, while at the same time we have to calculate the environmental effects. Whatever official procedure is required, it should have been completed, because every day it is as if we are seeing with our own eyes the nightmare of Tempe and we are scared…”.
They addressed to head of Patras Customs Sakis Markopouloswho gave the assurance that inside in the next 15 days the barrels will be moved to a safe place. And those affected add to “P”: “We are waiting for the chemical analyses, why we did not know from the beginning the cargo and especially if it is dangerous. The arrested drivers were lying, claiming to be transporting harmless paints and…paints. We know, however, from the analyzes that it is xylene and toluene and we are – now – in negotiations to find a suitable place, in order to transfer the barrels there. We estimate that in a week or two we will have a solution…”.
Mr. Markopoulos explained that “the cargoes are sealed and safe in special tanks and that, at present, there is no risk of ignition.”
However, it is true that xylene “explodes” at high temperatures!
