In imprisonment of seven years and eight months was sentenced 47-year-old police officer accused of trafficking of irregular migrants through “Macedonia” Airport at Thessaloniki.

The Three-member Criminal Appeal Court of Thessaloniki judged him guilty for facilitating the exit from Greek territory of citizens of third countries, gang and provocation – offering to commit a crime.

His court recognized it mitigating common law and decided that his appeal should have suspensive force. Thus he is released from prison, where he has been held temporarily since last June, until he is tried in the second degree. The conditions imposed on him are the ban on leaving the country and the payment of a cash guarantee of 5,000 euros. For the same case a foreigner was sentenced to 13 months in prison and another police officer was acquitted.

The police officer was arrested at the beginning of the summer of 2023 by his colleagues in the Internal Affairs Sub-Directorate of the Security Forces of Northern Greece, who had been following him for months. As described in the indictment, the 47-year-old is alleged to be a member of a ring that facilitated the exit of illegal immigrants from the country for a fee. The case file mentions nine cases, but the court found him guilty of some of them.

The 47-year-old was arrested when two foreigners tried to travel with fake passports before Brussels.

In his apology, he himself admitted individual acts.
