The residents of Ioannina found themselves in the sight of an unusual sky yesterday Monday (22/4) as the impressive meteorological phenomenon called mammatus clouds (mammatus clouds) made its appearance in the morning hours.
The photo with the eerie clouds was published by the Forecast Weather Greece Facebook page.
What are mammatus clouds and how do they form?
Their name comes from the Latin word “Mamma” which means breast, chest.
The phenomenon occurs when a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus cloud creates a pattern of bag-like structures that hang below the base of the cloud. These clouds are often described as a series of hanging, inverted bubbles or bags and can be a spectacular sight.
They are often a sign that the worst of the storm has passed
Mammatus clouds are most commonly seen in the summer months in areas with frequent thunderstorms. These clouds are usually associated with severe weather events such as thunderstorms, tornadoes and other types of atmospheric instability.
They are often seen after the passage of a storm front or during the cooling phase of a storm.
Despite their association with severe weather, mammatus clouds themselves are not dangerous. In fact, they are often a sign that the worst of the storm has passed.
However, their unusual appearance can be a cause for concern for those unfamiliar with the phenomenon.
