The Czech Solek has aimed to develop its presence in Greece with an emphasis on photovoltaic projects together with batteries, as well as standalone batteries.

As CEO Zdenek Sobotka told energypress, this is a group with a presence in major European markets, such as Spain, Romania, France, as well as in South America. Its strategic goal is to reach 3.9 gigawatts of installations by 2028 from 276 megawatts today.

Solek already has a 300 megawatt portfolio under development in Greece with a focus on photovoltaics. In the last storage tender, it secured an 18 megawatt project, while it is also developing another 40 megawatts of RES in Cyprus. At the same time, it is also considering the possibility of expanding to offshore wind farms.

Indicative of the importance it attaches to Greece is that it organized its annual European meeting in Athens on Monday with the participation of domestic players and institutions.

Speaking about the developments in the Greek market, Mr. Sobotka stated that despite the increase in cuts and the addition of a battery for projects that will take part in the next RES tenders, investment plans remain viable and there is a clear incentive for businesses in the sector.

Therefore, he announced that Solek will take part in the next RES auction, but also in future auctions for standalone storage, where it will even claim higher power.

The CEO of Solek sees as a key solution for our country the development of storage to levels even higher than those predicted for 2030 together with the management of demand from the consumer side through the appropriate incentives.

At the same time, he believes that the natural gas units should henceforth only have the role of reserve in order to drop the wholesale prices in Greece and to reach levels similar to those of the rest of Europe.

As Mr. Sobotka pointed out, “the new storage systems together with the gradual shift of gas plants to backup supply will be able to lower prices and support RES penetration at higher levels.”
