Students from Athens, in Lesbos for bird watching

In the context of educational visits to schools in Attica in Lesbos – Global Geopark Unesco carry out bird watching activities in the wetlands of the Gulf of Kalloni.

In particular, on the morning of Sunday, April 21, 2024, the 2nd High School of Kallybion from Attica carried out bird watching in Aliki Kallonis and in the afternoon the General High School of Melission, accompanied by Ms. Constantina Bendana, Head of the Educational Programs Department of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

The schools were informed about the importance of the Kalloni salt marsh wetland, its great biodiversity and the species of birds that can be found in the Kalloni wetlands by the staff of the Museum and through the special educational cards identifying the most important birds of the wetlands of Lesvos.

Then with the special binoculars and telescopes of the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest / Center for Environmental Information of Kalloni, the students had the opportunity to discover up close the unique birds of Aliki Kalloni during their rest and feeding, with the support of the executives of the Biodiversity Group of the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest / Center for Environmental Information of Kalloni of Ms. Tsonidou Evitas, Kakabouras Vasilikis and Deligiannis Angelou.

The students observed dozens of flamingos, avocets, and sandpipers, learning about their unique characteristics.

The goal of the bird watching educational programs is to inform and raise students’ awareness of the ecological and environmental value of the wetlands of Lesbos and the animal and plant organisms of the wetlands.

Students and teachers completed their educational program excited and full of new experiences.

The excursion is part of the actions for the wetlands of Western Lesvos that are implemented in the framework of the action “Actions to highlight protected areas of Lesvos”, which has been included in the Operational Program “North Aegean 2014-2020” with the implementing body the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest .
