In the Municipal Council Municipality of Thessaloniki his parents and students protested 89th Primary School of Thessaloniki reacting to the “rumored and methodical dismantling of the 89th Elementary school and the further degradation of the education the children receive”, as they emphasize.

The President of the association of parents and guardians Antonis Manolis addressing the mayor Stelios Angeloudis, he emphasized that “we are here to express our protest against the looming closure of our school by the municipality. In 2019 a committee of engineers inspected the building, it was deemed a second priority for secondary inspection. The Technical Report in November 2023 was not particularly risky. 2 weeks ago the mayor called us and told us that the new technical report shows dangerous issues and therefore the building should be abandoned. We asked for the technical report, which happened after a 15 minute check, and to date it has not been shared. The previous one that deemed it safe happened after a thorough check. Two thousand citizens signed a protest. Ignorance of the municipality of Thessaloniki that did not replace a supposedly temporary building, our children will not pay for it. I request that the construction of a new school in our neighborhood, until then, continue, operate and a thorough study of static adequacy and reinforcement be carried out, to be launched immediately so that it can be done in the summer”.

THE Stelios Angeloudis answering, he emphasized that no child will be left without a school shelter. Specifically, the mayor said: “The new municipal authority is not responsible for this situation. The letter from the technical service said that the solutions should stop working. The municipal authority is against mergers, actively participating in a demonstration against mergers. We don’t want a single child to lose their place. From the new school year, 3 of the 5 solved ones must be closed. I asked the technical chamber within 10 days to have its own autopsy and opinion, if it has static adequacy. If there is no problem, I asked for their opinion on what fixes can be done, otherwise we will search together with you to find the solution. I asked the Minister of Education to join the construction of 2 schools immediately. The conclusion of the chamber will be communicated to the parents, if it becomes possible we will proceed with any interventions they tell us, so that the school remains open”.

The parents’ letter

As he wrote this morning makthes.gr, the parents in a letter requested from the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the State “the immediate commitment of a plot of land suitable to house the new modern 89th Primary School, in Analipsi”.

They are also asking for the immediate financing of the planned expropriation and the building of the new modern 89th Primary School. In addition, in the letter they state that “until the transfer of our school to a new modern building complex located in our neighborhood is completed, we request a repair and/or static strengthening study of the existing building if this is required.

The works that will be foreseen by the study should be implemented as soon as possible and certainly before the start of the new school term”.

On his part, Mr Prodromos Nikiforidis, Deputy Mayor of Technical Projects, Environment and Sustainable Mobility to the municipality of Thessaloniki with his statements at makthes.gr had made it clear how the closing of the specific school has not been pre-decided.
