Weather: Increased dust concentrations today, heat and mud showers

Transportation episode Saharan dust towards our country which is already underway since yesterday, is expected to present a peak today 23/04. In addition to the greatly increased concentrations of dust that will limit visibility, mud showers are expected to occur mainly in the north and west of the country. Tomorrow (24/04) the turn of the winds to the west will result in the limitation of dust in the Dodecanese and its progressive removal to the east.

The forecast maps below show:

– With red shades, the concentration of dust in the atmosphere during the midday and evening hours of Tuesday 23/04.

– With yellow shades the areas where mud rains will occur during the same time intervals.


According to Thodori Kolydastoday it will be windyFoen type winds and high temperatures will prevail.

These are strong downslope winds. “Many times we have seen comparable or even greater differences of 16°C between North-West Greece and Southern Island areas, especially in cases where strong southerly downward winds prevail. Of course we are not referring to something “unprecedented”, such as e.g. for today’s 28 °C in Heraklion and 11 to 12 °C in the northwest”, says the EMY director.
