Parents and students of the 89th primary school, located in the area of Analipsi, staged a protest at the municipal council meeting of the municipality of Thessaloniki, denouncing the municipality for the looming closure of the school complex.

The president of the Association of Parents and Guardians, Antonis Manolis, referred to the temporary school that was set up after the 1978 earthquake to meet school needs and which still houses children today. He emphasized that the municipality is planning to close it, despite the fact that in November 2023, after an inspection, the competent committee of the municipality recorded damages and problems in the existing building, which, however, never prevented its continued operation. The parents asked to ensure the full functionality of the school and to build a new one.

The mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, taking the floor, argued that his will is not to close the school. “I am with you”, he said and added that he has asked the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) for an additional, new opinion and autopsy. “Let the TEE inform us if it is dangerous, if it has static adequacy. If the answer is that work and interventions must be done, we will do them in the coming months. If this possibility does not exist, we will look together to find a solution”, he emphasized.

Mr. Angeloudis added that “we are against mergers, we don’t want a single child to lose their natural space” and underlined that he claims the construction of two new schools to meet the needs. “On the subject of the school roof, neither tensions nor banners are needed. We are together. Together in the claim, together on the road”.
