Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Archbishop Hieronymos will jointly visit buildings of the archdiocese on Friday, April 26. With church-government relations strained after the passage of the same-sex couples bill and attacks on blue-collar MPs multiplying in recent days, the Prime Minister is making moves on the chessboard in the hope of a peaceful Easter.

With the great celebration of Christianity just around the corner and knowing full well that the New Democracy MPs will be in churches on “Holy Week”, the prime minister will attempt to convey an image of normalization of State-Church relations so that the reprehensible attacks of extremists disappear to members of the ruling party.

The damnable slap

Like this member of the “Niki” party who insulted and slapped Angeliki Delikari because the member of parliament from Kavala of the ND voted for the bill on the marriage and procreation of same-sex couples. The incident happened at the church of Saints Constantine and Helen at the Pulideio Nursing Home in Kavala at the end of the service and after the priest from the pulpit mentioned the presence of the MP.

The “Niki” deputy is on Disciplinary charges for what he said to the Social Affairs Committee

The party of Dimitris Natsios issued a statement about the incident stressing that it “immediately confirmed the suspension of her party status and her immediate referral to the Disciplinary with a question of deletion”. But this was not enough as the path of polarization was chosen by the MP of “Victory”, Nikos Papadopoulos, against the official line of his party. Intervening in a debate in the Social Affairs Committee, he appeared to justify the attack by arguing that the government’s actions incite violence.

The president of Niki, Dimitris Natsios, after the new disagreement, called his deputy for an explanation, who is being referred to the Disciplinary, on Tuesday (23/04).

Verbal violence to the Deputy Minister of Transport

A few hours after the attack she received inside a church, ND MP Angeliki Delikari. A priest verbally attacked the Deputy Minister of Transport Christina Alexopoulou.

Specifically, during an event in Tampahanon square, in memory of the victims of the Turkish occupation, a priest launched a verbal attack on Mrs. Alexopoulou, with exhortations and curses, on the occasion of the bill for the marriages of same-sex couples.

The priest spoke about the specific bill and verbally abused the deputy minister, with a strong tone, exhortations and curses. A few people who are related to the Church went to do the same. Finally, Mrs. Alexopoulou managed to leave the Tabahano square.

The MP of Kefalonia, Panagis Kappatos, also became the recipient of a verbal attack, at the celebration of the Akathisto Hymn, on Saturday |(20/04) at the Holy Monastery of Sission.

“They are not correct”

We remind you that on the occasion of the attacks received by politicians in churches due to the approval of the bill for the marriage of same-sex couples, the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece, when asked about it, emphasized that “they are not correct”.

Specifically, the Archbishop stated: “Such events are not right. The Church is love. She complains, she says her positions, she is firm in them, but we must not forget that love is the one that is above all, as well as kindness and tolerance”.

He then mentioned the factor of upbringing as well as how some people perceive the issues of the Church: “These incidents are also due to the education of everyone and the influence of some people who perceive many things of the Church as revenge. The Church, however, does not take revenge. She loves, but she doesn’t leave her positions.”

⇒ A meeting between the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Hieronymos and the Minister of Education, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, is scheduled for Tuesday (23/04). According to the relevant announcement, the meeting is of a formal nature and will take place at 10 am, in the building of the Ministry of Education.
