Ominous, with regard to the development of the demographic problem plaguing our country, is the relevant assessment included in the official report of the European Commission on Demographics and the fiscal effects of population aging in the EU member states, in combination with limited births and an aging population.

The low birth rate that threatens our country swells with time, with Greece’s fertility rate being one of the lowest in Europe: some villages have not recorded a single birth for years.

Greece sends out an SOS – The data “sounds” the alarm bell

The estimate for the evolution of the main demographic variables is presented in the following table. The population, as projected by EUROSTAT, decreases from 10.438 million in 2022 to 7.777 million in 2070.

The following graph shows the comparison of the age pyramid between 2022 and 2070 for men and women.

The causes of subfertility

As for the causes of the low birth rate, these are revealed by the victims of the policy that gives birth to them. In particular, in a large survey carried out by DiaNEOsis, 80.2% of our country’s young people declare that they do not proceed with having children because they cannot do so due to poverty.

52.7% say that the government is to blame for the huge problems facing Greece today. 49.1% state that the economic situation of our country will continue to be bad in the future.
