High temperatures but also enhanced winds type Foen will dominate tomorrow in the south of the country, according to its manager EMY, Thodori Kolydas.

As he writes in his post:

“Many times we have seen comparable or even greater differences of 16°C between North-West Greece and Southern Island areas, especially in cases where strong descending southerly winds prevail. Of course we are not referring to something “unprecedented”, as e.g. for today’s 28 °C in Heraklion and 11 to 12 °C in the northwest.

Tomorrow Tuesday we may catch even higher prices (the 30s), but they won’t be many, as reported in the press. These prices will be limited mainly in Crete, or where the locally strengthened Foen-type descending winds will again play an important role,” says the director of EMY.

What are the Foen winds

The so-called katabatic wind, or kabatatis, commonly “downwind”, belongs to the category of periodic winds. A downwind is one that blows down from mountain tops or high coasts.

Its creation is due to the difference in density of the air found on the slopes of the mountains or the coasts with that of the adjacent areas. This difference may be due to cooling due to nocturnal radiation or to other causes (e.g. the snow cover of the peaks or coasts).

The prognosis from the EMY

In the Ionian, continental and northern Aegean local rains and mainly in the central and northern continental sporadic storms.
Southeast winds in the Aegean locally 9 Beaufort.
