POEDIN is sounding the alarm ahead of Easter and the start of the tourist season by disclosing data from the research it conducted on the understaffing of hospitals and health centers on the islands.
“Our islands will be crowded with tourists and locals and yet the state of the islands’ health units and the EKAB remain particularly problematic and precarious”, says the president of the Federation, Michalis Giannakos.
The research “on the understaffing of the islands’ health units and ambulances” focuses on the understaffing of the hospitals on our islands, on the incentives to attract and stay that do not exist for doctors, nurses and rescuers of the ambulances but also the example of Cyprus where the fees are ” almost triple for doctors and nurses plus incentives”.
According to POEDIN: “CORFU HOSPITAL: Big problems in the pathology clinic. There are 2 permanent pathologists and 1 with a block. They are not enough to cover the needs.
Only 2 nephrologists serve in the Artificial Kidney Unit.
Big problem in the X-ray department. 1 resident serves and 3 radiologists come and help with a pad.
The opinions of the examinations are made by the private sector.
Serious shortages of nursing and other staff”.
