At least 64 arrests for criminal organization, reports of action in Attica, Volos and Ioannina

--

The Police have been carrying out a major operation since early morning to dismantle the main core of hooligans allegedly related to the case of the murder of the police officer Giorgos Lyggeridis.

So far, 64 people have been arrested, allegedly involved in the bloody incidents at Rentis, but also in other incidents of fan fights. An indictment for the creation of a criminal organization will be submitted on Tuesday (23/4) to the Prosecutor, while charges of moral complicity in the fatal wounding of the 31-year-old police officer are also expected to be brought.

For at least five years, from 2019 until today, the 158 people included in the voluminous file numbering more than 3000 pages are said to have been active, not only in Attica but also in the province, such as Volos and Ioannina.

Of the more than 64 people who have been arrested, the experienced Attica security officers have identified many of them in 11-12 cases of fan violence.

However, the “very tough core of hooligans”, the leading core, amounts to about 20 people. According to police sources, 5 people are charged as moral perpetrators of the murder of Giorgos Lyggeridis.

The members of this criminal organization acted with a different composition each time. The police officers dealing with violence in the sports arenas have succeeded in the secret investigation for four months to “bind” the charge of the criminal organization, through important findings mainly from the scene of the murder of the MAT police officer.

The videos, photos and witness statements “gave” basic evidence, while the forensic labs also “talked” to various munitions that had been identified outside the Melina Mercouri stadium and had been taken to the forensic labs, as well as from the stadium’s toilets where they had been placed set fire to clothes in order to eliminate their traces.

At the same time, persons were identified from the removal of telephone privacy, while the movements they had made were also targeted by the investigations.

Typical case, as reported by a competent source of EL.AS. with knowledge of the investigations, it is the gathering that some of the members had held at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium, before the match at the Melina Merkouris stadium and the murderous attack against Giorgos Lyggeridis. There, they loaded munitions into vehicles and took them “in procession” to Melina Merkouri Stadium, entering it normally.

The alleged leaders at one point gave the signal saying “let’s go out now and finish them off, clean them up”. Then they distributed the munitions such as bottles, flares and others, resulting in the killing of the policeman.

Among the incidents that were allegedly involved is in April 2024 between fans of the same team in Georgios Karaiskakis, with the same information sources reporting that this fight took place over the leadership. In Volos some 24 hours before the incidents in Rentis and the attack against the police which was characterized as retaliation for Volos, in another episode in 2023 when they had injured a fan of another team with a knife, as well as in 2019 when they had also stabbed a female fan of another team group.

An unemployed “team leader” had 5,000 euros in his pockets

All those arrested come from the door of the organized followers of the particular group and face the criminal organization charge with different sub-charges depending on the degree of their involvement. Among those arrested is the minor brother of the accused for launching the deadly flare, as well as the manager of a well-known trapper.

The evidence that has been found against those arrested is numerous and “burns” those directly involved with the violent episodes of that night, as all these months they have been identified through the findings from the Forensic Laboratories as well as from the analysis of the video materials.

Especially for the main core of the “group leaders” investigations have also been made for money. In fact, in the possession of one of the directly involved, who is unemployed, 5,000 euros were found and confiscated, which he could not justify. One of them was arrested in Ioannina in his attempt to escape the country.

“I lost a son, I lost a hero”

The operation of EL.AS., became known while the “No to Violence, Yes to Sports” day was in progress in memory of Giorgos Lyggeridis, in the presence of the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis and the family of the 31-year-old, with the father upon hearing the news he fell into the arms of the police officers who served in the same squad as his son.

“I lost a son, a hero. But through this son I found another family. His platoon. And all of you. What these children did to my son, they will continue to do,” said the father of the 31-year-old police officer, Thanasis Lyggeridis.

“Whatever the law says, from then on what are we to say? There goes our lad. Whatever they do now… Justification is always there of course. But if the adults are punished. The other kids who pay for them? What to say;” said, among others, the grandfather of Giorgos Lyggeridis.

The assurance that Justice will be delivered, as provided for by our Democracy and Constitution in the case of Giorgos Lyggeridis, was given by the Minister of Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis.

The arrested are expected to be brought before the prosecutor tomorrow, Tuesday.
